How to Prepare for a Drug Test: What to Know Before You Go

If you’ve been asked to take a pre-employment drug test, you’re not alone. Drug screening is a common step in the hiring process, especially in industries like transportation, healthcare, education, and government contracting.

At National Background Check, Inc. (NBCI), we administer DOT and non-DOT drug testing for individuals and employers across the U.S. To help you feel confident and prepared, we’ve outlined everything you need to know before your drug test appointment.

What Is a Pre-Employment Drug Test?

A pre-employment drug test is designed to detect the presence of substances such as:

  • Marijuana (THC)
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates (heroin, morphine, codeine)
  • Amphetamines
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Prescription drugs (in expanded panels)

Employers may require testing to ensure a drug-free workplace, meet state or federal compliance (e.g., DOT drug testing regulations), or reduce liability.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

To make the process smooth and compliant, be sure to bring:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, passport)
  • Any paperwork provided by your employer
  • List of current medications (prescription only)
  • Your scheduled appointment confirmation, if applicable

Walk-ins are accepted at many NBCI locations, but appointments are recommended for faster service.

What Not to Do Before Your Drug Test

To avoid a rejected test or false positive, avoid:

  • Taking someone else’s prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter medications that could trigger red flags (e.g., cold meds with pseudoephedrine)
  • Supplements or detox products that claim to alter test results
  • Drinking excessive water just before testing (may result in dilution)

Tampering or adulteration can result in automatic disqualification and potential re-testing.

Best Practices Before a Drug Test
  1. Hydrate normally—don’t overdo it
  2. Bring accurate medical info for prescription verifications
  3. Arrive on time and be ready for a monitored or observed test
  4. Avoid last-minute exercise or fasting—which may temporarily affect metabolite levels
  5. Ask questions ahead of time if you’re unsure what to expect
What to Expect During the Test

At NBCI, we follow strict chain-of-custody and confidentiality procedures. Here’s what the test typically involves:

  • Verification of identity and paperwork
  • Collection of a urine, saliva, or hair sample (based on employer requirements)
  • Sealing and labeling the sample for lab submission
  • Optional split specimen collection (for retest or confirmation)

Results are typically available in 1–3 business days, depending on the lab and test type.

DOT vs. Non-DOT Drug Tests

NBCI provides both:

  • DOT drug testing: Required by the U.S. Department of Transportation for safety-sensitive positions (e.g., truck drivers, pilots, transit workers)
  • Non-DOT testing: Used by private employers and organizations; customizable test panels
